Icelandic Food

You can’t go to a new place without trying their best food — here’s Iceland’s!

Icelandic Hot Dogs. Ever hear of them? Bill Clinton proclaimed them as the best hot dogs in the world, and I don’t disagree! They were delicious and are sold at street vendors all over Reykjavik. They are made of 70% lamb and the casing cracks/snaps when you bite into it (YUM!). Served with ketchup, sweet Icelandic mustard, relish, and fresh and friend onions (under the hot dog)!

Fish and Chips. Okay, this was an obvious must-try in Iceland. Fishing and fish processing is one of Iceland’s largest and most well-known industries, right?! We went to a popular restaurant by the harbour, Reykjavik Fish Restaurant. My mom and I were both starving when we got our food after a long day of walking around the city — it was devoured in minutes!

Trout (And Rye Bread Ice Cream). Trout! More fish! This was my mom’s plate when we stopped at Café Loki. It was a trout tarte served with salad and rye bread ice cream. First, the trout tarte — delicious! It had a very smokey flavor. The salad was pretty standard, and the rye bread ice cream sounds horrific but it was the best ice cream I have ever had although it did not taste much like rye bread. It was better than UW’s own Babcock Ice Cream or a pint of Ben & Jerry’s. My mom even tried to find a recipe for it online, but unfortuately, we could not. Guess that means another trip back to Iceland is approriate! 😉

Lamb. Another food we had heard good things about, so we gave it a try. There are a few different ways you can order the lamb, and I chose the Meat Soup at Café Loki. It was delicious and well-cooked, although it did remind me a lot of my mom’s stew.
